Days out in Yorkshire: The Mama Meet & Market guide.

With our Yorkshire Family Market taking place on 5th April at White Skye Fields, we thought we’d curate some family-focused travel inspiration for the lovely city of York. Steeped in history and bustling with excitement, this city makes an amazing destination for a family day out.

The city centre is a short 20 minute drive from our event, where you will find the York Minster which will quite frankly take your breath away. The only one of its kind in Northern Europe its a must see, tours are available but currently there are open workshop spaces where you can witness stone statues being made. You can’t mention the city centre without talking about the famous ‘Shambles’ , the medieval shopping streets  with overhanging timber-framed buildings date back as far as the fourteenth century. They are also thought to be one of the inspirations for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films.

Anyway lets get back to days out, we have curated a great selection of options for those wanting to make their trip to see us worth while. Whether you want another activity on April 5th or you are making a weekend of it below are some great family friendly days out. Enjoy!

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

A recent study showed that the average child is only spending an hour outside each day, so there’s never been a better time to put down the devices and head out into the natural world.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a great place to introduce the whole family to art while making sure they get plenty of fresh air. Situated around 50 minutes away from White Syke Fields, you can stop off on the way home and let your little ones run free amongst 500 acres of historic parkland teaming with incredible sculptures.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Mini explorers will love Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a walk-through wildlife adventure which is only an hour away from White Syke Fields. There’s lions, tigers, leopards, lemurs, meerkats and loads more incredible animals to see up close. Ideal for those who love a walk on the wild side.

National Railway Museum

York is home to tons of family friendly museums, one of which is the National Railway Museum just a 20 minute drive away from White Syke Fields. Experience science shows and storytelling events. Explore 300 years of railway history and find out what it’s really like to be an engineer. You can even take a trip on a real life miniature railway. All aboard!

York Castle Museum

It can be tricky to get young children into history which is why we love York Castle Museum - a place where history really comes to life.

There is absolutely loads to do at this location which is a 20 minute drive from White Syke Fields. Start by having a look at what’s on (they have exhibitions on everything from the swinging sixties to vintage toys) then step out onto the cobbled streets of the Victorian era on their recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate.

You can even pick up a special card which grants you free entry to York Castle Museum as well as the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens and York Art Gallery. Perfect for saving some dosh if you want to make a weekend of your visit to the Mama Meet and Market.

Goose Play in Harrogate

A 50 minute drive from White Syke Fields is Goose Play, a new space which focuses on imaginative play. Expect reading pods, huge play blocks and loads of room for active play. All amazing for nurturing exploration and creativity. There’s also crafty events for those that love to get messy and healthy, honest food for when tummies start to rumble. Yum.

Flamingo Land

We couldn’t talk about York without mentioning ‘The Big One’. Flamingo Land is Yorkshire's ultimate theme park attraction complete with an award winning zoo, leisure park and Peter Rabbit Adventure

From Meerkat Encounters to thrilling roller coasters, this place has everything you need for a high octane family day out. And as it’s only a 30 minute drive from White Syke Fields it’s a great time to plan a visit before the summer crowds hit.

Fun at the Mama Meet and Market

We could not be more excited to venture ‘up north’ for our very first Yorkshire Family Market - and to host it in such a special city brings us so much joy.

Bustling with indie makers, foodie goodness and immersive experiences for your entire squad, the Mama Meet and Market makes for an unbeatable family day out in York. Although with these recommendations you may now be tempted to make your visit last a little longer…
